Rob Dyrdek Gets Renewals, Pilot in MTV Deal

Celebrations are in order for MTV producer Rob Dyrdek. The network today that closed a "multi-year production deal" with Dyrdek and his company Super Jacket that includes pilot order for an as-yet unnamed project (potentially Dyrdek's fourth with MTV, if it lands a pick-up) and multiple renewals. The Viacom-owned network is bringing back Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory for a seventh season and has landed a multi-season renewal for Ridiculousness, the fifth season of which premieres July 10th. There will be a sixth, seventh and "additional" season of the latter as well, according to the network, though what "additional" means wasn't specified. Snack-Off, which premieres the same day, looks to be something of a dressed-down version of the Food Network show Chopped, with amateur chefs competing to create the best meals using snack food aisle ingredients, such as jellybeans and potato chips. Restaurateur and culinary-world enfant terrible Eddie Huang will host, while chef Jason Quinn, supermodel Chrissy Teigen and comedian Yassir Lester will serve as judges. Dyrdek, who spent years as a pro skateboarder, first joined the MTV family in 2006, when he starred in and executive-produced the reality series Rob and Big. Shortly after that show ended in 2008, he launched Fantasy Factory in 2009. That show follows Dyrdek and a gaggle of friends as they perform stunts and do generally off-the-wall things inside a 25,000-square-foot warehouse. As the Hollywood Reporter notes, "season six [of the show] averaged 1.5 million viewers and 1.4 rating among 12-34." The show was originally supposed to end after its sixth season, but as MTV explained in its announcement, it's "one of MTV's most buzzed about social shows." Ridiculousness, which is a clip show focusing on viral videos, began airing in 2010. According to the Hollywood Reporter, its fourth season "was Thursday's No. 1 original cable series, averaging 1.8 million viewers and a 1.5 rating." In the statement, MTV's president of programming Susanne Daniels called Dyrdek "an essential part of MTV" and said he "has an undeniable appeal to millennials." Dyrdek returned the compliment, saying that "MTV has been a great partner over the years" and that he and his team "look forward to continually delivering amazing content for years to come." Dyrdek's resume extends beyond work with MTV. He also executive-produces and lends his voice to Nickelodeon's Wild Grinders and represents several brands, including the skater-oriented DC Shoes and TAG Body Spray (his scent is called Make Moves). As the Hollywood Reporter notes of the deal announcement, the addition of Snack-Off and the renewal of Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness "shores up an unscripted portfolio" for the network. MTV's other reality series include The Real World, Teen Mom, and Catfish.
