Friday Night Lights (NBC), but congratulations to NBC for finding a way to keep this quality drama on the air for five seasons.

Ratings Breakdown:

CBS was the most-watched network on this third Friday in July, with ABC No. 1 among adults 18-49. But once again there was nothing worth positively noting on the evening.

Canadian drama Flashpoint opened the evening for CBS, with 6.00 million viewers (#1) and a 1.2 rating/5 share among adults 18-49 (#1t) at 8 p.m. That led into repeats of CSI: N.Y. (Viewers: #1, 6.28 million; A18-49: #2, 1.1/ 4) and Blue Bloods (Viewers: #1, 6.32 million; A18-49: #3, 1.0/ 3), which remain intact in the Friday 9-11 p.m. block next season. This fall, look for new CBS drama A Gifted Man at 8 p.m. (which may not be so gifted once the ratings come in).

ABC aired repeats of Shark Tank (Viewers: #2, 4.28 million; A18-49: #1t, 1.2/ 5), which returns in midseason, and Primetime: What Would You Do? (Viewers: #2, 3.97 million; A18-49: #1, 1.2/ 5) from 8-10 p.m., followed by veteran 20/20 at 4.55 million viewers (#3) and a second-place 1.2/ 4 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m.  At this time, ABC has not confirmed what it will air in the Friday 8 p.m. hour this fall.

In series-finale news, a 90-minute edition of NBC’s Friday Night Lights went out with a whimper at 3.48 million viewers and a 0.9/ 3 among adults 18-49 from 8-9:30 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Friday Night Lights (NBC)

8:00 p.m. – Viewers: 3.69 million (#3), A18-49: 0.9/ 4 (#3)

8:30 p.m. – Viewers: 3.26 million (#3), A18-49: 0.8/ 3 (#3t)

9:00 p.m. – Viewers: 3.51 million (#3), A18-49: 0.9/ 3 (#3)

Next on NBC was a 90-minute edition of Dateline at 5.02 million viewers and a 1.2/ 4 in the demo from 9:30-11 p.m. Here is the half-hour breakdown:

Dateline (NBC)

9:30 p.m. – Viewers: 3.99 million (#2), A18-49: 1.0/ 3 (#3)

10:00 p.m. – Viewers: 5.29 million (#2), A18-49: 1.3/ 4 (#1)

10:30 p.m. – Viewers: 5.77 million (#2), A18-49: 1.4/ 5 (#1)

As a reminder, new NBC drama Grimm inherits the Friday 9 p.m. hour this fall, making Dateline a one-hour edition. Come November, however, expect Grimm to be gone and Dateline to be back to two hours.

Elsewhere, Fox filled the evening with repeats of Bones (Viewers: #4, 3.05 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 30 and House (Viewers: #4, 2.46 million; A18-49: #4, 0.8/ 3). And The CW aired encore telecasts of Smallville (Viewers: #5, 1.18 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 2) and Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 1.14 million; A18-49: #5, 0.4/ 2). Returning Kitchen Nightmares and Fringe will populate Fox this fall, while Nikita on The CW inherits the 8 p.m. time period in place of departed Smallville (and into Supernatural).

Ratings Breakdown:

There is not much you can say, no doubt, if the No. 1 network (CBS in total viewers; Fox among adults 18-49) averages less than 4 million viewers and a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49. That said, CBS opened with the series-finale of Chaos (Viewers: #2, 3.04 million; A18-49: #3, 0.5 rating/2 share at 8 p.m.), followed by a repeat of The Mentalist (Viewers: #1, 3.65 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.5/ 2) and long-running 48 Hours Mystery (Viewers: #1, 4.55 million; A18-49: #1t, 0.9/ 3) from 9-11 p.m. And Fox aired two repeat episodes of Cops (Viewers: #1, avg. 3.17 million; A18-49: #1, avg. 1.0/ 5 from 8-9 p.m.) and 9 p.m. animated special The Indestructibles, which averaged 3.49 million viewers (#2) and a first-place 1.2/ 5 in the demo at 9 p.m. The Indestructibles was the highest rated show of the night among adults 18-49.

Elsewhere, ABC filled the evening with repeats of 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show (Viewers: #3, 2.45 million; A18-49: #2, 0.6/ 3 at 8 p.m.) and the two-hour ABC News Special—Jaycee Dugard: In Her Own Words (Viewers: #3, 3.79 million; A18-49: #2, 0.9/ 3 from 9-11 p.m.). And NBC aired encore telecasts of game show Minute to Win It (Viewers: #4, 2.16 million; A18-49: #4, 0.4/ 2), Law & Order: Criminal Intent (Viewers: #4, 2.43 million; A18-49: #3t, 0.5/ 2) and Law & Order: SVU (Viewers: #3, 4.02 million; A18-49: #1t, 0.9/ 3).

Ratings Breakdown:

CBS dominated this third Sunday in July in the overnights, beating a night of all repeats on ABC by 54 percent. Third overall was NBC, followed by Fox, which also aired all encore telecasts. Seventy-three percent of last night’s lineup was repeats.

CBS opened the evening with granddaddy 60 Minutes at a first-place 6.1/12 at 7 p.m.  Lead-out Big Brother dipped by 30 percent in the overnights to a still dominant 4.3/ 8 at 8 p.m., but there is every reason to believe it will still be the top-rated show for the evening among adults 18-49. If the veterans are smart, they will lobby to get Will Kirby-wannabe Dominic out of the house. Rounding off the evening for CBS were repeats of Undercover Boss (#1: 3.3/ 6) and CSI: Miami (#1: 3.5/ 6) from 9-11 p.m.

ABC filled the night with repeats of America’s Funniest Home Videos (#2: 3.1/ 6), Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (#3: 2.7/ 5), Castle (#3: 2.7/ 4) and Body of Proof (#2: 2.8/ 5).  NBC opened with long-running Dateline (#3: 2.5/ 5 at 7 p.m.), followed by a two-hour repeat of America’s Got Talent (#2: 3.0/ 5 from 8-10 p.m.) and clinker The Marriage Ref (#3: 2.3/ 4 at 10 p.m.). And Fox ranked fourth in each half-hour in the overnights with its encore combination of American Dad (1.2/ 2), Bob’s Burgers (1.1/ 2), which returns in midseason, The Simpsons (2.1/ 4), The Cleveland Show (1.8/ 3), Family Guy (2.4/ 4) and another episode of American Dad (2.2/ 4).

What’s Hot/What’s Not

Above Average SNL:

An encore telecast of NBC’s Saturday Night Live on July 16, hosted by Justin Timberlake with musical guest Lady Gaga, averaged a 3.7 rating/9 share in the metered markets.  Comparably, this was the top-rated show of the evening, and the top-rated SNL telecast since the original run of this episode on May 21. Versus the same night last year, SNL was up by 16 percent.

Cable Scorecard – Thursday, July 14:

USA drama Burn Notice led the Thursday cable troops last week, with a top-rated finish in both total viewers and adults 18-49. Normally demo dominant Swamp People on History Channel had to settle for No. 2 this week. Recent drama entry Suits on USA remains a good fit out of Burn Notice, while FX is reporting week-to-week growth for new comedy Wilfred of 14 percent in adults 18-49, 29 percent in men 18-49 and 21 percent in target men 18-34 (461,000).
