The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular (NBC), Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular (CBS)

Repeat Count:

85 percent of the schedule were repeat telecasts.

Ratings Breakdown:

NBC finished first in the overnights on this July 4th Monday, with a 37 percent advantage over second-place CBS.  Third overall was an evening of all repeats on ABC, followed by Fox, and The CW, which were also encore telecasts.

In the specials department, the annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular on NBC led the evening with a 6.2 rating/12 share from 9-10 p.m., building from a 4.9/10 at 9 p.m. to a stellar 7.5/14 at 9:30 p.m.  Comparably, this was up by 22 percent from its year-ago Sunday overnight performance, and it built by 88 percent from a repeat of lead-in America’s Got Talent (#1: 3.3/ 7 at 8 p.m.).  At 10 p.m., an encore telecast of the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular capped off the evening with a second-place 3.7/ 8.

Over at CBS, the annual Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular won the 10 p.m. hour with a 4.4/ 9 in the overnights, but the Macy’s coverage on NBC one hour earlier had a 41 percent advantage.  Earlier in the evening on CBS were repeats of How I Met Your Mother (#2t, 2.1/ 4), an 8:30 p.m. edition of Mike & Molly (#2: 2.3/ 5), Two and a Half Men (#2: 3.0/ 6), and the regularly scheduled 9:30 p.m. edition of Mike & Molly (#2: 3.1/ 6) from 8-10 p.m.

Elsewhere, ABC filled the evening with repeats of The Bachelorette (#3: 1.8/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.) and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition (#3: 1.6/ 3 at 10 p.m.).  Fox aired a repeat of Masterchef (#4: 1.5/ 3) and House (#4: 1.1/ 2), and The CW encore telecasts of 90210 (#5: 0.5/ 1) and Gossip Girl (#5: 0.3/ 1).
