Although moving bona fide hit The Mentalist to Thursday out of CSI next season means more viewers may even tune in, I am not so sure two consecutive hours of NCIS (the parent show and upcoming spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles) is such a good idea. There were two summer series premieres last night: Fox drama Mental and reality/competition Hitched or Ditched on The CW. Mental finished third from 9-10 p.m., with a 3.8/ 6 in the overnights. While that may not sound like much, it did manage to built out of an encore telecast of lead-in House (#3: 3.1/ 5 at 8 p.m.) by 23 percent. Hitched or Ditched, also at 9 p.m., opened with a last-place 1.2/ 2, which was on par with the season (or series) finale of lead-in Reaper (#5: 1.3/ 3 at 8 p.m.). Although rumor has it that Reaper may end up in first-run syndication next season, chances of that happening are very slim. Elsewhere, NBC aired two-hour special TV’s 50 Funniest Phrases, which averaged a 4.9/ 8 in the overnights, building by half-hour as follows: TV’s 50 Funniest Phrases (NBC)8:00 p.m.: 4.3/ 7 (#2)8:30 p.m.: 4.5/ 7 (#2)9:00 p.m.: 5.3/ 8 (#2)9:30 p.m.: 5.5/ 8 (#2) That led into a repeat of Law & Order: SVU, with a second-place 4.9/ 8 at 10 p.m. As a reminder, SVU heads to Wednesday at 9 p.m. next season out of family drama Parenthood (which is NBC’s second attempt at creating a series from the Ron Howard theatrical). ABC had an embarrassingly low-rated Tuesday with its combination of two episodes of the canceled According To Jim (#4: avg. 2.7/ 5) and part two of miniseries Diamonds (2.4/ 4 from 9-11 p.m.). Source: Nielsen Media Research data (R = repeat)_____________________________________________________________________________ Ratings Box:What’s Hot/What’s Not -Series-High Performance for Jon & Kate Plus 8:Ignited, no doubt, by the recent tabloid headlines, season five of TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8 shattered the record books with 6.6 million households, 9.8 million total viewers and 4.3 million among target women 18-49 in the Monday 9 p.m. hour on May 25. Comparably, this was more than triple the recent time period average over the last six weeks. -Strong Showing for The Link on History Channel:Also based on ratings in the 9 p.m. time period on May 25, History Channel special The Link, which focused on the discovery and investigation of a 47-year-old primate fossil, was above-average at 2-million viewers. Comparably, this was 67 percent above the cable net’s average in prime-time. Demographically, The Link scored as high as 904,000 adults 25-54. -Kardashians Sign-Off on a High Note:Also on Monday, and based on the metered markets, E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians rose to a record 1.93 household rating at 10:30 p.m. Comparably, that was the second highest rated original series on cable in the time period.
