Netflix Renews Stranger Things and Releases Teaser Video for Season 2

Things will get even Stranger on Netflix in 2017. The streaming service has officially renewed Stranger Things, its supernatural drama that is an ode to '80s pop culture, for a second season. The nine-episode Season 2, which Netflix is calling Stranger Things 2, will debut in 2017. The Duffer Brothers—creators Matt and Ross Duffer—will return to oversee the series. Netflix announced the renewal with an enigmatic teaser, which reveals the chapter titles for each of the nine episodes in Season 2. Released on July 15, Stranger Things—which pays homage to the works of Stephen King, Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, who were responsible for so many iconic contributions to '80s pop culture—quickly became summer's most-buzzed about series. The talk around the show (Barb! Eleven! The soundtrack! That logo!) eclipsed that of TV's other big summer events outside of the Olympics, including Mr. Robot's Season 2 return, the fourth season Netflix series Orange Is the New Black, new TNT drama Animal Kingdom and everything else the broadcast networks trotted out (sorry, BrainDead). As usual, Netflix doesn't release ratings data, so there's no way to know exactly how popular the show was this summer. But data from Symphony Advanced Media indicated that the show is one of the service's most-watched shows of all time. While a Season 2 renewal was a no-brainer, especially given that Netflix reflexively renews all of its series, the network tends to space out its renewal announcements to give the show another bump of publicity, which it hopes will also attract new subscribers. Season 2 will be set in fall 1984. That's a full year after the events of the first season, which focused on a missing boy in the town of Hawkins, Ind. The intriguing chapter titles for the new season include Madmax, The Boy Who Came Back to Life, The Pumpkin Patch, The Brain and The Lost Brother. Much of the cast will return, but "we don't know about Eleven," Ross Duffer told Entertainment Weekly, referring to the girl with telekinetic abilities. "We leave that up in the air." Still, her return seems likely, given that Season 2 will delve more into the Upside Down, the alternate dimension featured on the show. "There's a lot more mystery there to be solved," Ross told Entertainment Weekly. The Duffers told EW they are approaching Season 2 as if it is a blockbuster sequel. "I know movie sequels get a lot of shit, but the ones we look up to aspire to pivot and do something different," said Matt. "There's Temple of Doom, Aliens, Terminator 2. I guess a lot of this is James Cameron. But he's brilliant. And I think one of the reasons his sequels are as successful as they are is he makes them feel very different without losing what we loved about the original."
