Mitch Hurwitz: ‘Arrested Development’ Movie and Episodes in the Works

Could shoot as soon as next summer

It’s been five long years since Fox’s cult hit Arrested Development ended its three-season run by reassuring brokenhearted fans with the promise of a movie. But since then, the movie has turned into a running joke, with the show’s cast and producers constantly hinting that the feature was in the works, without ever giving a solid update. But now, it looks like Arrested fans might finally be able to stop pining for the next chapter in the lives of the highly dysfunctional Bluth family.

At this past weekend’s New Yorker Festival, during a panel discussion with the show’s creator Mitchell Hurwitz and members of the cast, Hurwitz told the audience that the movie is still in the works—in addition to a limited continuation of the television series to bring fans up to date on the characters’ whereabouts.

“Just creatively, I have been working on the screenplay for a long time and found that as time went by, there was so much more to the story,” said Hurwitz. So rather than waste precious film time on catching up with the characters, he said, “We’re trying to do a limited-run series into the movie . . . We’re basically hoping to do nine or 10 episodes, with almost one character per episode.”

Hurwitz didn’t provide details about what studio or TV network would be involved in the series-movie combination, only telling the audience that it “requires studios to work together that don’t typically work together, film and TV.”

As for a timeline, the show’s star Jason Bateman said (and later confirmed in a tweet), “There’s business left to be done, but creatively we are all on board and have a very specific plan about how it would come out and what we would do and when we would shoot it. I think we’re targeting next summer to shoot it.” Hurwitz then added the series could be ready for next fall.

If the past has been any indication, Arrested fans might not want to get their hopes up too high. But after five years of waiting, this development will be sure to spark a frenzy.
