Mediaweek TV: ‘Rita’ Rocks Out On Lifetime

In advance of Lifetime’s Oct. 20 launch of original comedy Rita Rocks, the cable net has asked for three additional scripts of the series. Initially, the show received a 13-episode order.

The multicam comedy revolves around a harried suburban mom (played by MADtv’s Nicole Sullivan) who finds fulfillment by starting a rock band in her garage. It was created by Stan Zimmerman and Jim Berg, whose credits include Roseanne and The Golden Girls. Rita Rocks is co-owned by Lifetime and production company Media Rights Capital.

The cable net has planned an aggressive launch strategy for the show, airing five original episodes of the series over the course of its premiere week, Monday to Friday, at 8:30 p.m. Those episodes will lead-out of Reba repeats.

Rita Rocks is Lifetime’s first original comedy in 10 years (since Oh, Baby, starring Cynthia Stevenson). Rita Rocks also stars Tisha Campbell-Martin (My Wife and Kids) and Richard Ruccolo (Two Guys and a Girl).
