Key & Peele Look Back on What Made Their ‘Liam Neesons’ Spot a Promoted Clip Worth Watching

Duo is selective about selling characters for ads

Jokesters Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele—best known for their Comedy Central sketch comedy show Key & Peele—have created several hilarious, over-the-top characters, including super enthusiastic action movie fans The Valets.

In February, the Valets turned their attention to airplane thriller Non-Stop, creating a clever piece of sponsored content that became viral gold, generating more than 1.9 million views on YouTube.

At San Diego Comic-Con, the two spent some time discussing the promotional tie-in with Non-Stop. They said it felt like a good fit for the characters and noted that Liam Neeson's willingness to appear in the clip made it doubly worth pursuing.

"We probably wouldn't be throwing The Valets at essentially a promotional opportunity, except for the fact they got 'Liam Neesons' to do it," Peele said, referencing the duo's mispronunciation of the actor's name. "Also, Non-Stop ended up being a cool movie."

"(Liam Neeson) came around the corner with his saucer and his tea cup, and I thought ‘This is going to be a great day!’” Key added.

Here's the video of their discussion about the ad:

In the ad, Key and Peele take full advantage of having the Irish actor on hand by re-enacting several key scenes from the movie's trailer in front of Neeson. Impressively, he manages not to crack a smile as the two slow-mo gun battle right next to him. Check out the ad below:

Though their two names often appear in credits together, Key pointed out that they have no problem going their separate ways on passion projects. Peele is working on producing and directing, while Key has landed some acting roles. Don't worry, though: They have no plans to break up. The fourth season of their hit show will premiere on Sept. 24, and they're coming together to work on a Judd Apatow film, which Key said was still in its nascent stages.

"It is going to happen. It is going to be the best comedy film that has ever happened. Dr. Strangelove? Nonsense. Tootsie? Get out of here!" Peele joked.
