Information Diet: Tim Gunn

The 'Project Runway' star (and author and fashion guru) is disciplined about his media consumption

What’s the first information you consume in the morning?

The first thing I do is I check my cell phone to see if I slept through any texts or voicemails.

What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?

Every morning, I leave my apartment, go to the corner newsstand, get The New York Times, walk to Dunkin’ Donuts, get a large coffee with milk, walk back to my apartment, spread the newspaper out on the kitchen counter, and I drink my coffee.

What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train, or bus?I’m a subway person and I have my radar up for whatever could possibly happen. I don’t listen to music or read, and I never sit, because in this city, you have to have your wits about you.

Are you a TV junkie, or on an airtime-restricted diet?

I’m a TV junkie. I find television to be very therapeutic.

If you’re a couch potato, what do you watch, and how: TV, laptop or tablet?I love well-written, scripted television—comedies like How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory, and more serious shows like Mad Men. And I’m an HGTV addict! I love all the DIY shows and the house-hunting shows. I actually watch it all on television, and sometimes I even DVR shows that I’m watching in case I want to

watch them again!

Before bed, do you: bite into a novel; graze on Twitter; or fast until morning?

I fast until morning. When I go to bed, it’s time to go to bed. I don’t even have a TV in the bedroom—I’d fall asleep with it on every single night.

Which is more nutritious: print or Web?

I’m ambivalent about it. I love print, but I’m also a Web junkie. I feel that I really need both, and I would feel undernourished without both.

Give us the skinny on your favorite app.

I am a big Sudoku person. We’re taping Project Runway right now, and if there’s 10 or 15 minutes of waiting, I just get on my Sudoku app and it engages my mind. I also use the iBooks app.

What’s your biggest digital indulgence?

I’ve become a big Mac junkie. I was totally PC, and last summer while making the home visits for Project Runway, Season 8, the crew said to me, “We can’t believe you have this antiquated, pathetic-looking cell phone. You need an iPhone!” So I got the iPhone, and then I thought, “I need to get an iPad!” The next thing I knew, I got a MacBook Pro.

With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?

I’m very disciplined about my phone. I don’t Twitter, and my Facebook page is an official Tim Gunn page, so it doesn’t require daily interaction. I’ve never shackled myself digitally, and I feel physically lighter for it.
