CBS’ San Fran New Station Expands Reach

KCBS-AM, CBS Radio’s News station in San Francisco is expanding its distribution to the FM band on KFRC-FM (106.9). Beginning Monday, Oct. 27 KCBS will be heard on 106.9, in addition to its online stream ( and via AOL Radio.

KFRC’s ratings-challenged Classic Hits format (1.2 overall share in Spring) currently heard on 106.9 will migrate to the station’s HD side channel and online at

Adding KCBS to the FM dial should open up KCBS to more listeners, particularly younger listeners that barely know where the AM band is. It may also help boost KCBS’ ratings, currently No. 5, closer to perennial market leader KGO-AM, Citadel’s News/Talk station.

“The benefits of this move are plentiful, from improved sound quality and ubiquitous distribution, to increased brand exposure,” said Doug Harvill, senior vp and market manager for CBS Radio San Francisco.
