National Ratings in Prime-Time:

Week of June 15, 2009

CBS and Fox led this bland fourth week of the summer 2009 season, with CBS first in households, total viewers and adults 25-54, and Fox No. 1 among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34. CBS was close to year-ago levels, while Fox dipped by margins of 21 to 27 percent in the five surveyed categories. Fewer than seven million viewers and a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49 for the dominant network, however, is nothing to crow about. Yes, it is going to be a long summer season.

Excluding MyNetworkTV (which is still benefiting by Friday Night Smackdown! and will not be included in the weekly round-up next season after the schedule of repeats kicks-in), yearly erosion was the visible observation elsewhere. Most negatively impacted: The CW, which dipped to sixth (behind MyNetworkTV), with losses of as much as 50 percent among adults 18-49 and adults 18-34.

In series-premiere news, two episodes of NBC drama Merlin opened in the Sunday 8-10 p.m. block with mid-level results (see Summer Series scorecard below). In season-premiere news, ABC’s sophomore I Survived a Japanese Game Show got some mileage with 5.35 million viewers (#25 overall) and a 2.1 rating/ 6 share among adults 18-49 (#8) out of Wipeout on Wednesday . Exiting on the network was dramedy The Unusuals at a not so unusual 3.80 million viewers (#57) and a 1.2/ 4 in the demo (tied for #43). Needless to say, it earned its cancellation stripes.

Summer on the broadcast networks remains a breeding ground for burn-off series such as the following quartet:

Eli Stone (ABC) – Sat. 10 p.m.

Viewers: 2.54 million (#74); A18-49: 0.5/ 2 (#83t)

Cupid (ABC) – Tues. 10 p.m. (series finale)

Viewers: 2.14 million (#78); A18-49: 0.3/ 1 (# 77t)

The Chopping Block (NBC) – Fri. 8 p.m. (return)

Viewers: 1.96 million (#81); A18-49: 0.3/ 1 (# 77t)

Kings (NBC) – Sat. 8 p.m.

Viewers: 1.75 million (#84); A18-49: 0.3/ 1 (#77t)
