Bill Goodwyn Upped at Discovery

Bill Goodwyn has been named to the newly created role of president, global distribution, Discovery Communications. A mainstay at the Silver Spring-based media company, Goodwyn also was appointed CEO of Discovery Education.

In his new role, Goodwyn will lead efforts to secure additional carriage for Discovery’s 100-plus global networks. (International expansion has been a top priority at Discovery since David Zaslav came on as president and CEO in January 2007.) Goodwyn also will continue to spearhead Discovery’s domestic distribution efforts.

Goodwyn previously served as president, domestic distribution and enterprises.

Along with the bump upstairs on the distribution side, Goodwyn also was made the top dog at Discovery’s education division. Since 2007, Goodwyn has been instrumental in re-launching Discovery’s education efforts, overseeing the team that has brought the service’s streaming media content to more than half of the nation’s K-12 schools.

Before accepting the CEO mantle, Goodwyn had been president, Discovery Education.

“Since 1987, Bill has built a content distribution platform that is second to none and rebuilt the nascent Discovery Education division into one of the fastest-growing parts of our company,” Zaslav said, by way of announcing the twin promotions. “Bill has helped to make Discovery the company it is today, and is the…natural choice to lead the next phase of Discovery’s international carriage expansion.”
