AT&T Sells Anime Streamer Crunchyroll to Sony’s Funimation for $1.2 Billion

Move marks WarnerMedia's continued consolidation of streaming assets

AT&T has sold the subscription anime streaming service Crunchyroll to American anime distributor Funimation for nearly $1.2 billion as the media company looks to offload or rethink smaller streaming assets to double down on building out all-purpose streamer HBO Max.

The deal, which was announced Wednesday night, will give Funimation, a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and a Sony Music Entertainment subsidiary Aniplex, a leg up in the niche direct-to-consumer streaming space. Crunchyroll has more than 3 million subscription subscribers around the world who pay for original and library programming, and the service has 90 million registered users globally who watch programming on an ad-supported basis, attend events and access content like mobile games and manga.
