AT&T’s upcoming direct-to-consumer streaming service, which will launch in about a year, isn’t intended to be a Netflix rival, though the services are going to share streaming rights to at least one popular show: Friends.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson talked about the new offering—and yesterday’s internet meltdown over the possible exit of Friends from Netflix next month—at UBS’ 46th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference this morning in New York.
