-Ratings Breakdown:

CBS led in the Tuesday overnights opposite sports on ABC (Game 3 of The NBA Finals) and NBC (Game 6 of The Stanley Cup Finals), beating second-place ABC by seven percent. But ABC is expected to win the evening among adults 18-49. In the distant No. 3 spot was NBC, followed by Fox and the CW.

Repeats on CBS fared as follows last night:

CBS/Tuesday
 8:00 p.m. – NCIS (R): 8.0 rating/13 share (#1)
 9:00 p.m. – The Mentalist (R): 8.3/13 (#2)

10:00 p.m.: 48 Hours Mystery (R): 6.5/11 (#2)

In case you can’t get enough of The Mentalist, it also airs Thursday at 10 p.m. out of CSI, which is its new home this fall.

Over at ABC, game three of the Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando averaged an estimated 8.7/14 in the overnights for the primetime portion from 9-11 p.m., faring as follows by half-hour:

NBA Finals (ABC)

 9:00 p.m.: 7.1/12 (#2)
 9:30 p.m.: 8.9/14 (#1)

10:00 p.m.: 8.8/14 (#1)

10:30 p.m.: 10.0/17 (#1)

As a reminder, results for any live sporting event are always approximate. Earlier in the evening on ABC was another prime-time edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live (#3: 2.8/ 5 at 8 p.m.), followed by the half-hour NBA Countdown (#2t: 3.5/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.). Word of advice to Mr. Kimmel: stick to late night!

Game six of The Stanley Cup Finals on NBC was a bust, meanwhile, with a mere 3.9/ 7 in the overnights from 8-11 p.m. Take a look at the half-hour breakdown:

The Stanley Cups Finals, Game 6 (NBC)

 8:00 p.m.: 3.6/ 6 (#2)
 8:30 p.m.: 3.5/ 6 (#2t)
 9:00 p.m.: 3.9/ 7 (#3)
 9:30 p.m.: 3.8/ 6 (#3)

10:00 p.m.: 4.5/ 7 (#3)

10:30 p.m.: 4.3/ 7 (#3)

Moving to Fox, recent drama entry Mental remains a failure, with a fourth-place 3.2/ 5 in the overnights at 9 p.m. At 8 p.m. on Fox was a repeat of House at a fourth-place 2.8/ 5. While you can’t judge a show by a repeat, encore telecasts of House used to perform better. And so did the originals, come to think of it.

Last was the CW care of a repeat of 90210 (#5: 0.9/ 2) and reality/competition Hitched or Ditched (#5: 1.3/ 2), which remains ditched by the audience.

National Ratings in Prime-Time:

Week of June 1, 2009

It was another week of mixed leadership, with CBS first in households and total viewers and the home of The NBA Finals, ABC, dominant in the three key demos — adults 18-49, adults 25-54 and adults 18-34. The initial two games of Orlando versus Los Angeles on The NBA Finals (Thursday and Sunday) held the top two spots of this second week of the summer season (see Top 30 Rankings below), with both ABC and CBS on par overall from year-ago levels.

Four nights of the return of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, now on NBC, was not a blockbuster (see chart below). But in this depressed early summer landscape, it helped lift NBC to a second-place finish in households, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54. Less successful on NBC was the two-episode debut of Canadian crime drama The Listener at 5.32 million viewers (#39 overall) and a 1.4 rating/4 share among adults 18-49 (tied for #44) in the Thursday 9-11 p.m. block. Take a look at the four-night track for I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here:
