Facebook turned to New York University for real intelligence to lead its artificial-intelligence efforts, hiring NYU deep-learning expert Yann LeCun to run its AI lab, GigaOM reported.

Facebook turned to New York University for real intelligence to lead its artificial-intelligence efforts, hiring NYU deep-learning expert Yann LeCun to run its AI lab, GigaOM reported.

According to GigaOM, LeCun focuses on applying deep-learning techniques in computer vision and image recognition.

GigaOM added that one of the social network’s first hires for its AI lab was Marc’Aurelio Ranzato, who earned his Ph.D. under LeCun at NYU before working with Google.

Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg discussed AI during the social network’s third-quarter earnings call, saying:

There is one more evolution in our strategy to understand the world that I want to mention.
