Mobile Game Roundup: Surfingers, Historica and More

As we begin a new year, there are already lots of new mobile games to try, like Candy Crush Jelly Saga, the newest match-three puzzle game from King. The game is the third installment in the Candy Crush franchise, and offers new level types, including turn-based boss modes. Elsewhere, Hi-Rez Studios released its first game on mobile: Jetpack Fighter. The side-scrolling action game asks players to swipe on the screen to move their character and attack enemies. Finally, Kongregate and Another Place Productions released Battlehand on iOS and Android. The card battle game features 10 heroes (each with a different deck), and challenges players to complete more than 200 quests as they battle against the evil Queen Amethyst and her minions. If you’re looking for something different to try, here’s a look at some additional games which released this week. Surfingers (Free on iOS, Android) - From Digital Melody Games, Surfingers is an endless survival surfing game, which challenges players to swipe up or down on the screen with one or two fingers to change the height of waves and create a path for the surfer to keep surfing. Players can collect stars as they surf, which can be spent on new playable characters. These characters can also be unlocked by earning high scores while playing. In addition to surfing on the water, the game offers environments like the desert, as an example. Norm of the North’s Digit Dodge (Free on iOS, Android) - Lionsgate has partnered with Animoca Brands and film producer Splash Entertainment for the release of two mobile games based on the upcoming Lionsgate film Norm of the North, which hits theaters on January 15. This first game is described as an ‘edutainment’ app, which was designed to 'enhance' children's math skills through a snowball fight between Norm and his friends, the Lemmings. The game is played through local multiplayer on the same device, with players tapping on O or X buttons to toss snowballs at their opponent after they've determined if the current math equation is correct (O) or incorrect (X). Gods of Olympus (Free on iOS) - From Aegis Interactive and Orb Interactive, Gods of Olympus is a base-building combat game that allows players to control characters like Zeus and Apollo (among others) in real-time combat. Gamers build their base by collecting the right resources, and buildings are constructed instantly, without wait timers. The game offers real-time cooperative gameplay, which lets players assist their friends in battles against other players, or help their friends defend their cities when they're attacked. Planktons (Free on iOS, Android) - This endless survival game from Planet of the Apps asks players to drag their finger around the screen to move a plankton through the water while avoiding jellyfish and collecting orbs. While playing, gamers may have the opportunity to 'power-up' their plankton and eliminate some of the jellyfish from the screen. Players may also collect gems while playing, which can be spent on new playable characters. Users can earn additional gems by watching videos when these opportunities are presented. Swing (Free on iOS, Android) - From Ketchapp and No Monkeys, Swing is an endless survival game, challenging players to help their character swing between platforms of different sizes, with gaps of various sizes in between. For each platform, the character will create a swinging rope automatically, leaving players to tap on the screen when they think the rope is long enough for the character to reach the next platform. Games end when players miss a platform. Gamers can collect gems as they play, which can be spent on new playable characters. Players will receive additional gems as gifts over time. Historica (Free on iOS) - This puzzle battle RPG from GameSamba sees players become a member of the International Ghost Defense Organization, which is challenged to protect humanity from time-traveling spirits. In each battle, players draw lines across matching symbols to create chains of three or more symbols, removing them from the screen. Gamers can collect new heroes to take into battle over time, with over 200 heroes available to collect at launch, and more coming in future updates. In addition to a single-player story mode, Historica offers ranked multiplayer matches and special in-game events. In addition to the new games released this week, a few games also launched during the recent holiday season. Check them out below. Royal Trouble: Hidden Honeymoon Havoc (Free to try, $4.99/$6.99 full game unlock on iPhone, iPad) - From G5 Entertainment and Orchid Games, Royal Trouble: Hidden Honeymoon Havoc is the sequel to Royal Trouble: Hidden Adventures. The adventure game follows Loreen and Nathaniel on their honeymoon, and challenges players to help them escape from Merry Castle after they become trapped. The game features 29 locations to explore and 10 mini-games to complete. Players can control both Loreen and Nathaniel during the game. TrainCrasher (Free on iOS, Android) - This side-scrolling action game from Softmax follows four resistance squads as they complete missions within a train. The beat-em-up gameplay sees players tap on buttons to attack enemies or destroy objects, and players can collect new equipment for their heroes as they complete stages. Users can also upgrade their existing equipment. Minecraft: Story Mode Episode Four: A Block and a Hard Place ($4.99 on iOS, Android, Amazon) - This fourth episode in the five part series from Telltale Games features the conclusion of the Wither Storm storyline, as players help Jesse and friends travel through the Farlands in an attempt to defeat the Wither Storm and save the world. Episode Four is available as an in-app purchase within the main Minecraft: Story Mode app, which also costs $4.99 to download. Players have the option to purchase Episodes 2-5 in a bundle for $14.99. The game's fifth episode will reportedly release in early 2016. In addition to this launch of Episode Four on iOS, Android and Amazon, the game's first episode, The Order of the Stone, is now available to purchase on Windows 10. Additional episodes will be released on Windows 10 'in the coming weeks.'
