Mobile Game Roundup: Mechanosaur Hijacks the Moon, Numbies and More

Are you looking for a new mobile game to try this weekend? As usual, there are quite a few new options available, including Warhammer: Arcane Magic, a digital board game from Turbo Tape Games. Elsewhere, Rovio released Angry Birds 2, the first true sequel to the pig-smashing sensation, and En Masse Entertainment released its first mobile title, Fruit Attacks, which challenges players to defend Earth from an army of fruit aliens. Looking for a different game to try? Here’s a look at some additional games released this week. Mechanosaur Hijacks the Moon (Free on iOS) - From XperimentalZ, this endless survival game stars a dinosaur looking for revenge against the ‘Asteroidians’ who destroyed his race on Earth. In each game, players control the movement of the moon on its orbit around Earth, and are challenged with protecting the Earth from being destroyed by asteroids. In each game, players tap on the screen to make the moon move faster in its orbit, positioning the moon to use its gravity to suck in asteroids before they reach Earth. When players allow three asteroids to hit Earth, the game ends. Players can share their high scores with friends. Mind the Arrow: Match the Dots (Free on iOS, Android) - From Petricore and publisher Thumbspire, Mind the Arrow: Match the Dots is a puzzle game challenging players to duplicate a shape found in the corner of the screen by tapping on dots in the center of the screen to change their color. The dots in the example picture, and those in the center of the screen, surround arrows. As the arrow in the example picture rotates or otherwise changes, players must determine which dots to tap in the center image to make the correct match. Players have 30 seconds to make as many matches as possible, and will earn bonus time as they successfully duplicate each picture. If they survive long enough, the center arrow will move or rotate as well, increasing the challenge even more. Players can share their high scores with friends, and have access to leaderboards and achievements. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? (Free on iOS, Android, Amazon) - From Ludia, this title based on the television game show allows players to take on random opponents or their Facebook friends in multiplayer games, or spend currency to play solo games. In each game, players are challenged with timed multiple choice trivia questions from school subjects like art, grammar and chemistry. As players answer questions correctly, they’ll have a chance to advance through grades, from first grade to fifth grade. When players miss a question, the next player can take his or her turn. While answering each question, players can spend currency on power-ups, like the ability to answer a question twice if they incorrectly answer the first time, as an example. Players progress through overall experience point levels as they play games, and will receive some free currency over time. Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? is also available to play for free on Facebook. Age of Ships (Free on iOS) - A naval combat game from Happy Universe, Age of Ships is set in an alternate pre-World War II version of history were fascists rule the world. Gamers have a single ship to their name, and must build a base and rebuild their fleet to take on enemies. Players can build and control more than 200 historical warships, including destroyers, cruisers, battleships and aircraft carriers, and can upgrade these ships by leveling them up and outfitting them with new weapons, armor, engines and more. In addition to a campaign mode, gamers can compete against other players around the world to climb the leaderboards. Age of Ships is also available to download for free on Android. Cosmonautica ($6.99 on iOS) - From independent developer Chasing Carrots, Cosmonautica is a simulation and commodity trading game allowing players to build and manage a crew and ship in space. As players accept missions and travel between planets, they’ll need to take care of their crew’s needs and moods. Players can research new technologies for their ship, or purchase new ships altogether. Gamers can also research new areas in space for exploration, battle with other space ships and trade a variety of legal or illegal goods as they visit space stations. Fire: Ungh’s Quest ($3.99 on iPad) - From Daedalic Entertainment, this point-and-click adventure game stars Ungh, a caveman who has let his tribe’s campfire go out and is sent on a quest to retrieve more fire. Players will complete puzzles as they interact with things like mammoths, monkeys and coconuts, and users can collect 30 coins as they explore environments. Spacecom ($3.99 on Android) - Following the game’s release on iOS, 11 bit studios has released Spacecom on Android devices. The game is described as a ‘starfleet command game’ which offers both a single-player campaign mode and up to five player multiplayer. Players can also try out new tactics in an AI skirmish mode. In each game, players will manage their fleets with a focus on strategy and planning rather than on fast actions. The mobile version of Spacecom offers three new multiplayer and skirmish maps, not found on other platforms. Tyga—Kingin’ World Tour (Free on iOS) - From Games2Win, this endless runner sees players helping the reality star and musician escape the paparazzi by swiping left, right, up and down to switch lanes and jump over or slide under obstacles on busy city streets. Players can pick up coins as they run, which are used to unlock new characters or purchase upgrades for the game’s power-ups, like magnets and shields. The game offers Cashplay integration, which powers real money tournaments. Race The Sun ($4.99 on iOS) - A purposefully challenging endless flyer from Flippfly, Race The Sun is a fast-paced flying game, challenging players to avoid obstacles as they race to stay in the light. Players can complete missions to unlock upgrades and level-up their ship, with customization options unlocking things like faster turning power. Players can collect energy boosts as they race to delay the inevitable sunset, and will unlock two ‘ultra-hard worlds’ as they level up. Training for Tinder ($0.99 on iOS, Android) - A Tinder parody game from T-Me Games, Training for Tinder is a level-based reflex-testing game, challenging players to swipe on cartoon profile pictures to match each level's requirement. One stage, for instance, may challenge players to focus on blonde pictures, swiping all blondes to the right and others to the left. Another stage may ask users to swipe right on everyone with glasses, and swipe left on those without, and so on. If players miss a swipe, they can spend coins to undo the move and continue, or start the level over from the beginning. Players earn more coins as they complete stages, and coins can also be purchased with real money. Numbies (Free on iOS, Android) - From Spanish developer Playspace, Numbies is a cross-platform multiplayer puzzle game, challenging players to earn more points than their opponent by clearing the board of Numbies. Each Numbie represents either a positive or negative number, so players will work to collect only positive Numbies, while hopefully forcing their opponents to collect the negative ones. On each turn, players choose from a small selection of Numbies based on the highlighted column or row on the grid. After each selection, the next available, selectable Numbies will change in a predictable fashion, offering strategy for players. For example, players could purposefully select a -1 Numbie, if they knew it would force their opponent to select a -5 Numbie on their next turn. Numbies is also available to play for free on Facebook, with a Windows Phone version coming later this year. A second app, Numbies World, has also been released for iOS and Apple Watch, offering a single-player version of the game.
