In July Google will shut off Reader, its RSS feed aggregator, the company said today.

The company cited declining usage as a rationale for shuttering the service, even while it acknowledged that Reader has a “loyal following.”

Reader users will be able to export their data and subscriptions using Google Takeout, the company said.

“To make the most of these opportunities, we need to focus—otherwise we spread ourselves too thin and lack impact,” Urs Hölzle, Google’s senior vice president of technical infrastructure, wrote on the company’s blog.
