Facebook Adds New Weapons to Its Fight Against Fake News, Hoaxes
Facebook will turn to third-party fact-checking organizations to help combat fake news and hoaxes.
The social network is also introducing easier ways for users to report fake news and flag questionable posts as disputed, and while those stories can still be shared, they will contain warnings, and they are not eligible to be part of promoted posts or ads.
Facebook is also targeting the publishers behind fake news stories and hoaxes, taking steps such as eliminating domain spoofing so that these publishers cannot pass their content off as coming from legitimate news sources, as well as analyzing publishers’ sites to determine if further action is necessary.
Vice president of News Feed Adam Mosseri said in a Newsroom post detailing Facebook’s new efforts:
We believe in giving people a voice and that we cannot become arbiters of truth ourselves, so we’re approaching this problem carefully.
