Dublin Confirmed As Twitter’s New International HQ
Twitter is to open an international office in Dublin, Ireland, the Irish Industrial Development Authority (IDA) has confirmed.
Twitter, which recently launched a UK blog, looked to be favoring London as the most likely base for its international operation, especially after opening offices there back in April of this year, but the England capital lost out to Dublin, in a move which has been hailed as an important victory for Ireland.
Fittingly, the IDA broke the news in a tweet.
“IDA is absolutely thrilled that Twitter has decided to establish an international office in Ireland,” said Barry O’Leary, CEO of IDA Ireland. “Twitter is a fantastic addition to Ireland’s dynamic digital media cluster and we are excited to support the company’s continued international growth.”
No indication has been given of how many new jobs will be created, but Richard Bruton, the Irish Minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation said that the announcement was a “fantastic win” for Ireland.
“The challenge now is to build on our strengths and the presence in Ireland of the world-leading companies like Twitter to build an indigenous engine of growth and get people back to work. Today’s announcement shows that we have real grounds for optimism in facing that challenge.”
Twitter joins other internet giants that have an international presence in Ireland, including Google, who employs some 2,000 people at their Dublin office, plus Facebook, LinkedIn, Paypal and Zynga. Technology veterans Microsoft, IBM, Apple and Intel also have operations bases in Ireland.
