Viral Video Law #13: Inspiration Can Be Viral Too

Each morning one of the first things I do is check YouTube's popular page to see what knee-to-the-groin, laugh-out-loud-funny, talking-dog clips are going viral, but today I was met with a nice surprise - an artistic, poetic, inspirational video was on the front of the popular page, amid the usual viral gobbledygook. Watching this video, based on a poem called 'How To Be Alone', I asked myself why we don't see more inspirational, artistic videos going viral on YouTube. After all, inspiration can be viral too! I won't lie and say that I think a poetic, inspirational video has the potential to reach as many people as a video of singing Harry Potter finger puppets or an adorable sneezing baby panda. In the world of viral videos things that are hysterical or shocking will always take the cake in the millions of views department. However, it seems to me that a lot of creators pigeon-hole themselves by thinking that any video needs to make viewers split their pants seams from laughter in order to get a lot of views. Your odds of uploading a million-view video to YouTube are slim in the first place, so why not create something creative and beautiful and settle for inspiring a few hundred thousand viewers instead of betting on the slim chances of making millions laugh? The video that caught my attention this morning is called 'How To Be Alone' and you can watch it below. It is based on a poem by a poet named Tanya Davis, and Tanya also stars in the video. Not only is the video absolutely gorgeous, a mix of colorful video and perfect animation, but the words to the poem are also beautiful. The video has 267,000 views so far, since its upload at the end of last month, and boasts 1,400 comments, 4,791 ratings and 4,931 favorites. I think it is so refreshing to see a video like this get recognized on YouTube and hope to see more of this kind of content on the popular page in the future. What do you think of 'How To Be Alone'?
