On the anniversary of the day that Nelson Mandela was freed from imprisonment on Robben Island 32 years ago, Snap has launched an augmented reality (AR) project to tell the history of Black people in Britain.
“Hidden Black Stories” has been created in partnership with the Black Cultural Archives and Tukwini Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, to raise awareness on Black figures throughout British history.
Aimed as an “immersive history lesson,” the lens technology will allow Snapchat users to hear stories behind monuments in iconic locations around London, including Trafalgar Square and Carnaby Street.

The stories shared include those from experts from Slavery Remembrance, Black History Walks, Nubian Jak Trust, Mary Seacole Trust and 100 Great Black Britons.
