Facebook is cracking down on the selling of land in ecological conservation areas within the Amazon rainforest on ecommerce destination Facebook Marketplace.
The social network said in a blog post Friday that it is updating its commerce policies to explicitly prohibit the buying or selling of land of any type in ecological conservation areas on its commerce products across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
The company will review Marketplace listings against an international authoritative database of protected areas to identify those that may be in violation, and it will use specific criteria to identify and block new listings in protected areas, which are crucial for conserving habitats and ecosystems and critical to tackling the global nature crisis.
Facebook wrote, “These are the first steps Facebook is taking to address this issue and, as with other integrity initiatives, we will continue working to prevent people from circumventing our enforcement.
