Instagram Tweaks Ranking System to Give Original Content More Visibility

The social platform also announced that all public U.S. users can now tag brands in Reels

To give original content on its platform more visibility, Instagram is making some changes to the algorithm that controls its ranking system.

An Instagram spokesperson said the updates to the ranking algorithm will make users’ feed less likely to recommend reposts of Reels and accounts with content filled with reposts from other users.

Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri said in an IG video post on Wednesday that content should get more recognition if it’s created from scratch, and the platform is “going to do more to try and value original content more, particularly compared to reposted content.”

When asked why Instagram is decided to take the initiative now, Mosseri tweeted: “As we lean more into recommendations, it’s becoming increasingly important that we don’t overvalue aggregators, as that would be bad for creators, and therefore bad for Instagram long-term.”
