What Marketers Should Know If Massachusetts’ Privacy Law Goes Through

Joining the bandwagon of state privacy laws, it may be the fourth state to enact data-privacy legislation

On Tuesday, Massachusetts’s state lawmakers advanced the Massachusetts Information Privacy and Security Act (MIPSA), a digital-privacy bill that would protect the residents’ safety and privacy, giving them more autonomy over personal information in the digital world. 

If the bill passes, Massachusetts would be the fourth state joining Colorado, Virginia, and California to enact comprehensive data-privacy legislation. 

“My constituents are deeply concerned about the privacy and security of their data,” said Senate Majority Leader Creem. “I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to advance the strongest possible bill to the Senate floor.” 

Here are the core elements of MIPSA that advertisers should know about if they want to avoid $7,500 fines:

  • People have the right to opt-out from both the sale of their personal information and targeted advertising.
