The ongoing dispute between Facebook and Apple over changes to the latter’s iOS 14 operating system may soon evolve into pre-empting a prompt.

iPhone users with Facebook and/or Instagram installed on their devices will soon start seeing a pop-up prompt that gives them the option of whether or not to allow those applications to track them across apps and websites owned by other companies.

Facebook said Monday that it will begin testing a screen of its own, which will accompany the Apple prompt and provide further information on why and how the social network uses people’s app and website activity.

The social network said in a blog post, “Apple’s new prompt suggests that there is a tradeoff between personalized advertising and privacy when, in fact, we can and do provide both.
