Facebook, Google Slapped With Hefty Fines by French Privacy Watchdogs

Denying cookies should be as easy as accepting them

The French privacy watchdog Commission Nationale Informatique & Libertés (CNIL) says it will fine Google $170.4 million (150 million euros) and Facebook $68.2 million (60 million euros) for breaching EU privacy legislations.

The announcement comes following CNIL investigations on how Google and Facebook sites display buttons allowing users to immediately accept cookies. The CNIL found the sites don’t provide an identical solution to refuse cookies. Currently, multiple clicks are required to decline all cookies, according to the statement released by CNIL.
