Brian O’Kelley: Ad Tech Needs to Embrace Change, Not Resist it

‘The Godfather of Ad Tech’ on the future of media and business lessons from the past

Few names in ad tech are more notable than Brian O’Kelley, inventor of the online ad exchange, the former CTO of Right Media Exchange—and the co-founder and (former) CEO of AppNexus.

After selling AppNexus to AT&T (which rebranded it as Xandr) for a reported $1.6 billion he subsequently left ad tech and is now an investor and CEO of Waybridge. In his current role, O’Kelley aims to apply programmatic principles to the logistics industry.

Last week, he made a rare return to Adland to candidly discuss how ad tech should operate in a post-cookie world, his bid to rival the duopoly of Facebook and Google and why AppNexus didn’t IPO.

Below are excerpts from a conversation O’Kelley participated in as part of the MadisonAlley.tv
