'Time' Sued Over Pics

Photographer claims his photos were used without permission

Time magazine liked Trey Ratcliff's travel photos so much they used them in the ad for their iPad publication—problem is, he says, they didn't pay him.

Ratcliff, who specializes in a highly technical form of photography called High Dynamic Range, charges in a federal lawsuit that the weekly news publication used two of his shots without his permission and never compensated him.

High Dynamic Range imaging allows a photographer to adjust the different exposures in the print, creating vivid color shots.

Ratcliff, an Austin-based travel photog whose work has been shown at the Smithsonian Institute, is generally regarded as one of the lead practitioners of HDR photography.
