Social media was tremendously beneficial for the marketing strategy of businesses of all shapes and sizes in 2013 but, for some brands, last year will be memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Take UK entertainment retailer HMV, for example. Back in January, the firm announced massive layoffs, then forgot to take away access to the company’s Twitter profile… from the social media team they had just fired.

Burger King was “taken over” by McDonald’s on Twitter in February, and in May, an appearance on Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares – and the social media backlash – proved disastrous for Amy’s Baking Company.
