Reuters Starts Fact-Checking Initiative, Joins Facebook’s Third-Party Program

The publisher and the social network teamed up on an e-learning course on deepfakes last December

Reuters kicked off a new fact-checking initiative Wednesday, and the multimedia news giant also became part of Facebook’s third-party fact-checking program.

The publisher said its new fact-checking initiative will help assess the authenticity of user-generated content on social platforms—including photos, videos, headlines and other content—in the run-up to the 2020 presidential election in the U.S. and beyond, in both English and Spanish.

Reuters’ findings will be shared in a new blog.

Reuters director of global partnerships Jess April confirmed to Josh Constine of TechCrunch that Facebook is compensating Reuters for its efforts, but she would not reveal any further details.
