Pinterest Ramps Up Efforts to Keep Culturally Inappropriate Halloween Costumes Off Its Platform

An advertising ban has been in place since 2016, and educational information will be shared with Pinners

Pinterest is taking steps to keep Halloween culturally appropriate on its platform.

A policy banning advertising of culturally inappropriate costumes has been in place since 2016, and Pinterest is bolstering it with new actions to reinforce the belief that cultures are not costumes.

When Pinners search for Halloween costumes, the results will include a prominent Pin with education from experts and Pinterest employee groups on how to celebrate thoughtfully and respectfully.

Searches for terms that might adopt cultural aspects for Halloween costumes, such as Day of the Dead costumes, will not be recommended to Pinners as new ideas, and they will instead see a feed card linking them to curated guides with educational information, culturally appropriate costume ideas and more.
