Pinterest wants to build out its ad products to compete with digital heavyweights like Facebook and Google, so the site has hired Google's vp of U.S. sales, Jon Kaplan, to head up its global business.

Kaplan will be responsible for building relationships with agencies and brands. He replaces Joanne Bradford, who left the social network in June for the COO role at SoFi.

Kaplan starts the new job on March 7 and will work out of the company's San Francisco headquarters. He will report to Tim Kendall, Pinterest's gm of monetization.

"We're excited to have Jon Kaplan join Pinterest," said Kendall in a statement. "He has tremendous digital advertising experience, and we're looking forward to even stronger growth of our global ads platform under his leadership."

Kaplan has worked at Google since 2004 across all of the company's search, video and display-advertising formats. He's also logged time on the product side with Google's mobile payment platform, Android Pay, and vertical search.
