Moments debuted in June 2015 as a tool for Facebook users and their friends to consolidate and organize their photos from events, and the social network eliminated photo syncing in favor of Moments in January.
TechCrunch reported that facial recognition was eliminated from Moments in those markets in order to comply with privacy laws and regulations, and a Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch that rather than automatically identifying friends in users’ photos, the modified version of the app can only suggest that groups of photos may contain those friends.
The Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch this is being done not with facial recognition, but with “a form of object recognition,” based on features such as the distance between a person’s eyes and ears.
