King's AlphaBetty Saga Word Game Launches on Facebook

Candy Crush Soda Saga developer King has released its newest game on Facebook. AlphaBetty Saga is a word game set in the 1930s, which follows friendly mice on an adventure around the world in search of new words. Players join Betty, her grandfather, Professor Alpha, and his assistant Barney, on the journey, as they complete dozens of levels of increasing difficulty. The gameplay in AlphaBetty Saga is similar to that of other games, including Zynga’s Words on Tour on mobile, and RockYou’s Facebook and mobile title, Words of Wonder (formerly owned by Disney Interactive). In each level, players drag their mouse across letter tiles to create words at least three letters long, removing those tiles from the screen. Words can be created in any direction, including backwards, so long as each new tile touches the last in some way. Each level has a move limit and a different goal, from simply earning a large number of points to clearing tiles trapped in bubbles, and so on. As players make words at least four letters long, various power-ups are added to tiles on the screen. One, a crown, can be used to automatically clear an additional tile from the board, while others, called line blasters, clear whole groups of tiles vertically, horizontally or diagonally (and sometimes all at once). These powers are activated by using their associated letter tiles in future words. As players clear tiles, a shuffle power charges at the side of the game board. Once filled, this can be used to rearrange the current layout of letters. Other boosts and powers are available for purchase before or during levels, and include instant access to crowns, and the ability to add a line blaster to the board, which removes letters in the direction of their choice (among others). Levels become more complicated over time. For instance, some letter tiles may be wrapped in vines, and must be used in two words before they’re actually removed from the screen. Players earn up to three stars on each stage, depending on their high score, and can compare these scores with their friends’ on level-specific leaderboards. As players collect stars, they’ll discover artifacts which can help them on their journey. For instance, a Mystery Mouse artifact adds a crown to the board at the beginning of each level, while a Royal Guard adds another move to the level’s limit. If players fail to complete a stage before running out of moves, they lose a life. These recharge automatically over time, or can be purchased with premium currency. Users can also send free lives to their friends. AlphaBetty Saga is available to play for free on Facebook. The game is coming soon to mobile devices.
