Instagram to Cyberbullies: Not in Our House

A new filter joins previous efforts against offensive and inappropriate comments, spam

Instagram launched two machine-language-powered filters last June to help block offensive or inappropriate comments and spam, and now, the Facebook-owned photo- and video-sharing network has its sights set on bullying.

Co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom announced in a blog post that Instagram deployed a new filter this week that “hides comments containing attacks on a person’s appearance or character, as well as threats to a person’s well-being or health.”

The new filter was enabled for all users worldwide, and it can be disabled via Instagram’s comment controls center.

Instagram will be alerted to repeated incidents by the new filter so that action can be taken, Systrom wrote.

He added, “Starting today, Instagram will filter bullying comments intended to harass or upset people in the Instagram community.
