Instagram: Here's How to Use Focus Mode in Stories

Create posts with blurry backgrounds

Did you know that Instagram Stories includes a Focus capture mode, which allows you to place the focus on a person in your shot and make the background blurry? Our guide will show you how to use Focus mode in Instagram Stories.

Note: These screenshots were captured in the Instagram application on iOS.

Step 1: On the Instagram Stories camera screen, swipe from right to left on the mode names at the bottom of the screen until the word “Focus” is directly under the capture button.

You can choose from multiple Focus effects, such as “Tilt-Shift” and “Circular.” By default, the “Classic” option is selected. If you want to change this effect, swipe from right to left on the icons above the capture button to preview the different options.

You can also change the intensity of the blur effect on the shot’s background. To do this, swipe from left to right on the slider on the left-side of the screen to bring the slider fully onto the screen, and without lifting your finger, swipe up or down to increase or lessen the intensity, respectively.

When you’re done setting up your shot, tap or tap and hold the capture button at the bottom of the screen to take a photo or video, respectively.
