That's why brands such as the National Basketball Association, BMW, Ellen and GoPro regularly beat out competitors in their categories.
But the end-of-the-year Adweek/Shareablee chart reveals some unlikely companies had big hits early in 2014 before our rankings were born. They included high-end fashion retailer Luisa Via Roma, The Steve Harvey Show, The Washington Post and Billabong, among others.
