G/O Media’s editorial director resigned today after weeks of turmoil at the publisher.

Over the last few weeks, tension with staffers and management at G/O Media has come to a head. In recent days, executives shuttered Splinter News, told Deadspin to stick to covering sports, fired its editor and its remaining editorial writers quit.

In an email to staff today, Paul Maidment, editorial director of G/O Media, said he was resigning “to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity.”

“I admire the journalism that you produce and the unique voice that is otherwise missing from mainstream media,” Maidment said in the statement. “It has been a great honor and I wish you all the very best. I am certain that the sites will grow and thrive in the future.”

A private equity firm called Great Hill Partners purchased a handful of digital media brands from Univision—including former Gawker Media sites and Fusion Media Group sites—in April and formed the brands under G/O Media.

Maidment joined G/O Media shortly after the new company was formed. He joined from Oxford Analytica, an international consulting firm and had previously been editor in chief of Forbes.com, where he worked with current G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller.

“We thank Paul for his hard work and wish him nothing but the very best,” a G/O Media spokesman said in a statement. “We will be working with our EICs to expedite the search for a new editorial director.”
