Former Elle Publisher Carol Smith Lands at Hearst

Will lead Harper's Bazaar

Hearst Magazines has hired fashion publishing vet Carol Smith, the former Elle publisher who was bounced after a short stint at Condé Nast last year, as it prepares for a tougher battle with Condé for fashion ad dollars.

Smith was named vice president, publisher and chief revenue officer at Harper’s Bazaar, making her one of the first big outside hires at Hearst Magazines since David Carey became president of the company about a year ago. Smith will have the same title that Carey gave all his publishers earlier in the year to reflect their responsibilities for creating multiple revenue streams for their brands.
