There Have Been 17 Billion Video Chats on Messenger in 2017

Facebook’s messaging app shared its year in review

Video chats doubled, emoji and GIF usage soared, conversations skyrocketed on holidays and group chats became mainstream.

That basically sums up the 2017 year in review for Facebook Messenger, and the application’s product management director, Sean Kelly, went into detail on each of those developments in a Newsroom post Wednesday.

There have been some 17 billion real-time video chats on Messenger thus far in 2017, doubling the total for the previous year. The group video chat feature debuted last December, and augmented reality features including masks, filters and Reactions were added in June.

On the visual messaging front, people shared more than 500 billion emojis on Messenger in 2017, or almost 1.7
