Cleveland and Washington Are the Future of Sports Branding

The teams are part of a year of major mascot rebrands

The Cleveland Indians became the second professional sports franchise this year to announce their intent to adopt a more inclusive brand identity, following Washington’s NFL team making the same call in July.

In a letter to fans on Dec. 14, owner Paul Dolan said Cleveland will find a new name to “better unify our community” following a review that began in June. But, unlike the Washington Football Team, Cleveland will retain the Indians name until it determines its new identity.
