Canadians Can Now Sing Along With Facebook and Instagram

The two platforms extended several music features to the country

Instagram users in Canada can make Shawn Mendes part of their Stories Facebook

Facebook and Instagram are bringing a host of music features to Canada, including music stickers on Facebook and Instagram Stories, song lyrics on Instagram and the ability to add songs to Facebook profiles.

The social network’s music features began rolling out in the U.S. in 2018 and had been extended to over 30 countries by last October.

North America label partnerships manager Alyssa Talovic Garcia and head of music publishing, North America Zeina Grenier detailed the features in a blog post.

Users in Canada can now add songs to photos or videos in their Stories on both platforms by opening the camera or selecting a photo or video from their gallery, and then clicking the sticker icon and choosing the music sticker.

This brings up a library of songs and, if lyrics are available for the track that is selected, they will pop up, as well. Tapping the lyrics enables people to change the animation and text style, as well as to move the lyrics around and rotate or resize the sticker.


The ability to add songs to a music section on users’ profiles is now live in Canada, and songs can be pinned at the top of profiles, displaying the artist and the track. When friends click on those songs, they will hear clips on Facebook, or they can tap through to hear the entire track on a streaming platform.

They can also add the same songs to their own profiles or visit the artist’s page.

Instagram’s questions sticker now supports music in Canada, as users there can respond to questions with songs from the music library and share favorites to their Stories.

Instagram also added visual effects to the music format in Stories, which respond to beat and sound.

Garcia and Grenier wrote, “Canada has a rich music ecosystem. These new experiences are made possible through new partnerships with music publishing societies and organizations, as well as labels and distributors in Canada. In order to ensure that the music experience on Facebook and Instagram reflects the diversity of Canadian artists and interests, we worked closely with a range of partners and artists and consulted with local experts.”

They continued, “One of the ways that this comes to life is through the music people can search and share. We’ve created unique Canadian-specific themes, so when searching for a song to include in a personal video or Story, people across Canada will find a huge library of music by Canadian artists. This includes beloved icons, chart-topping artists, as well as indigenous artists like Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Francophone artists like Marie-Mai, in addition to millions of international songs.”
