Bit Rates Reduced for Facebook, Instagram Videos in Europe

The aim is to reduce the strain on internet infrastructure during the coronavirus pandemic

Bit rates on videos on Facebook and Instagram will be temporarily reduced in Europe to help reduce the strain on internet infrastructure during the coronavirus pandemic.

YouTube revealed a similar move last Friday, saying that standard definition is now the default for streaming in that region.

Facebook communications manager for engineering in Europe, the Middle East and Africa Alexandru Voica said in a tweet, “To help alleviate any potential network congestion during the #Covid19 crisis, we will temporarily reduce bit rates for videos on Facebook and Instagram in Europe.
