The outlook for this winter looks grim. According to the Farmers Almanac prognostication, about 3/4 of the nation is expected to experience colder than typical conditions. Stockpiling reliable, long-term food sources that are easy to store and with a long shelf-life is one strongly recommended way to combat Stormageddon and poor winter conditions. Allen Baler of Food4Patriots offered more insight on the dreary outlook for this coming winter and a few key ways to combat it's effects. "Personally, I hope the Farmers Almanac prognostication for this winter is wrong. But with an 80-plus percent accuracy record, my money would be on them being right. Last year, the Farmers Almanac predicted a bitterly cold and snowy winter, and some parts of the country set all-time records for cold and snow. It looks like the Farmers Almanac folks are sensing a trend because they're predicting colder than normal temperatures for about three-fourths of the nation this winter." Baler delved further into the ramifications. "In fact, they're referring to it as a refrigeration zone. When you have frigid temperatures and excessive amounts of snow during an extended period of time, it means less food can get through to supermarkets and grocery stores, and it means reduced mobility for many people. Weather prediction is difficult, but knowing how to prepare for severe weather isn't." The precise Farmers Almanac predictions are in and the eastern 2/3 of the nation will be in the refrigeration zone. The book includes the final two months of this year, when the forecast calls for an average temperature thats 5 degrees Fahrenheit below the 30-year average in November and 4 degrees below the norm for December. How to Prepare "One of the most important things you can do to be ready in case the Farmers Almanac is correct is to stockpile as much nutritious, long-lasting food as possible for yourself and your family," Baler said. "Big snowstorms and frigid temps are probably on their way soon. We need to be prepared to hunker down." "Back in the prairie days, just about everybody prepared for winter. If you weren't prepared, you died. It was as simple as that. Now, even though people are so much better informed about disaster preparation than they used to be, approximately two-thirds of Americans fail to prepare for emergencies, according to FEMA." "Extreme weather events and attacks against the electrical grid have increased in recent years, but instead of stockpiling food, water and other essential items, too many people are counting on the government to take care of them in a crisis." Baler refers to some of our world's recent natural disasters as reason to consider becoming more weather-proof as a people. "Anyone who remembers the scenes following Hurricane Katrina inside the Louisiana Superdome where for some people it was more dangerous than staying on the New Orleans streets should realize that a FEMA center is not where you want to be following a catastrophe. Yes, it worries me that more people are not taking emergency preparedness more seriously. Being prepared is a huge part of becoming more independent and self-reliant, and thats what is going to keep you out of a FEMA center when a disaster strikes."
