Batman: Arkham City Lockdown Brings the Dark Knight to iOS

Warner Bros. Interactive and DC Comics have launched the first official Batman games for iOS, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown. The game comes on the heels of the release of Batman: Arkham City on console and PC platforms. This title is the sequel to the award-winning 2009 game Batman: Arkham Asylum by British developer Rocksteady Studios. Unlike the console title, which is an open-world action-adventure, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is a gesture-based fighting game in the vein of Infinity Blade from Epic Games and Chair Entertainment. In this game, players control the Caped Crusader in one-on-one brawls against famous Batman villains such as Two Face and The Joker. In these fights, players swipe either left or right on the screen to swing punches with the corresponding hands, swipe up to uppercut, and swipe down just as enemies attack in order to counter their blows. Tapping on the screen makes Batman dodge, and players have to tap specific points on the screen to perform elaborate counter-attacks. They also have to time their dodging when enemies fly into a rage and can't be blocked. From their command post in the Bat Cave, players choose which area of Arkham City — a giant prison constructed in the middle of Gotham City — next in order to do battle with criminals. Once they've chosen, they go up against a string of several opponents while drawing from a single energy meter. As they take damage, the meter drains, and if it's all lost before they reach the boss character, they must try again. After they defeat the underlings, they face the boss for each area. The first is Two Face, who must be dealt with using a Batarang that can be remotely controlled by tilting the player's iOS device while Batman's thrown weapon is airborne. Players receive points for defeating opponents, which can be put into upgrading their attack strength, defense, armor, gadgets, and moves. If players wish to increase their stats faster, they can use in-app purchases to acquire these points in exchange for real money. In terms of IAP, the game also offers a set of alternate looks for Batman, such as his likeness from Batman: The Animated Series, which can only be obtained by spending real money. The game contains some free bonus content in the form of Batman: Arkham City comics, iPad wallpaper, and character info sheets. Players can compare their performance against their friends using Game Center leaderboards. Batman: Arkham City Lockdown was developed by NetherRealm Studios, based in Chicago. Owned by Warner Bros., the studio was responsible for the 2011 reboot of Mortal Kombat for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is managed by creative director Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat franchise. A universal app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, Batman: Arkham City Lockdown costs $5.99. The game was released December 8 and is currently ranked No. 12 on the list of top-selling games for iPhone and iPod touch. It is ranked No. 3 on the same list for iPad, and has been chosen as Apple's iPhone and iPad game of the week.
