Arm Yourselves for the… Almond Milk Wars?

First, there was Coke and Pepsi. Now, there’s Almond Breeze and Silk Pure Almond.

These are two of the almond milk brands that have taken to the supermarket’s milk alternatives shelves to duke it out for consumer dollars.

This according to the Wall Street Journal, which reports that these two brands rank numbers fourth and fifth in the milk substitutes category, which has seen a spike in sales in recent years; almond milk sales are up 13 percent in 2010 even as the consumption of cow’s milk declines.

There are a variety of reasons for the increase.

The popularity of certain diets over the past few years as well as consumption by those who are lactose-intolerant or allergic to dairy has made almond milk a sought after commodity.

Both Silk and Blue Diamond Growers have ramped up their couponing, advertising, and promotional efforts to build customer loyalty, the story says. Milk alternatives come in many forms, such as rice milk and hemp milk.
