Jobs had stepped down as CEO earlier this year

Steve Jobs, Apple's co-founder, chairman and former CEO, has died, the company announced Wednesday evening.

A statement released by Apple reads, in part, "Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.

"His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

The Apple website now features an image of Jobs, who was 56, with a brief message saying that "his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."
