Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies Resurrects a Classic on iOS

Two years after releasing the still-popular Call of Duty: World at War Zombies on the App Store, Activision has unleashed another undead-filled iOS shooter in the franchise, Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies. While the original was set in World War II and based on the console and PC title Call of Duty: World at War, this follow-up is based on Call of Duty: Black Ops, released for consoles and PC in November 2010. This title specifically re-creates Black Ops' popular "Zombies" mode, and allows up to four players to collaborate in surviving an attack by the living dead by using every weapon and obstacle at their disposal. In the included map, Kino Der Toten, players cooperate to stand their ground against wave after wave of zombie attackers. In order to do so, they can shoot the undead, but also defend barricades that are placed over the windows and doors. These boards can take damage from zombies, who try to bash them down, but can also be repaired by players, a process that takes time during which players cannot shoot. In exchange for defeating zombies, players receive currency that can be used towards purchasing weapons. These range from rifles to machine guns and are both progressively more powerful and expensive. The waves of zombies become larger and more cunning, and players gain access to more areas of the level as they survive longer. The game keeps track of the number of waves defeated, individual scores and team scores. The game can be played solo, with players being joined by three computer-controller partners, but is really designed to be played with others over Game Center in real time. Its leaderboards are shared via Game Center, as well. Players are able to play alongside existing Game Center friends or randomly matched partners. In addition to the main game, Black Ops Zombies includes a Dead-Ops Arcade mode. This is a completely separate game with gameplay presented from a top-down perspective. It's played like many of the "twin-stick" shooters on the app store, with players moving using one virtual thumbstick and shooting in 360 degrees with the other. It offers 50 levels, with support for up to four players to cooperate via Game Center. Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies is a universal app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. It sells for $6.99 and Activision has announced that all future updates, including new levels, will be offered free of charge. The game is currently ranked No. 11 on the App Store's list of top-selling iPhone gaming apps, and No. 2 on the top-grossing iPhone games list. It's also ranked No. 11 on the paid games list for iPad, and is the No. 16 top-grossing game on Apple's tablet.
